Setting Timers to Help Achieve Your Business Goals

 

Setting timers is critical to achieving your business goals, don’t you think? So do you ever find yourself wishing there were more hours in the day? Do you have enough time to get everything done? When it comes to business, it sometimes seems that there could never be enough hours in the day. I feel that way often and I’m sure you do too!

 

Time Management

Time management is a stumbling block for many business owners. Sometimes it helps to find a way to hold ourselves accountable for how much time we spend on certain things. Timers are a great way to accomplish this.

 

Why Should Setting Timers Be Helpful?

Timers can be used for just about anything that you feel that you may be spending too much time on. As a business owner, your time is money so you don’t want to waste a minute.

Here are some examples of why you should use them:

  • Email

Some of us tend to get caught up in our emails for entirely too long. We click links, then find interesting links on those pages and end up surfing the web. Or we read newsletters that could wait until later. Setting a timer when reading our email can help us remember to cut to the important stuff and save the rest for non-business time.

  • Research

The Internet is one of the best research tools anyone could ask for. But it is also home to numerous distractions. Setting a timer when researching can help us stay on track.

  • Networking

Networking online can help you grow your business. But it also has the potential to eat up time that could be better used getting work done. Setting aside a certain amount of time to network and not going over it allows us to make connections without causing our work to suffer.

If you are working on multiple projects, setting a timer for each one can help you dedicate the appropriate amount of time to them. Projects that involve a lot of work or have approaching deadlines may need more time than smaller or lower priority ones. You can always reset the timer if necessary and add more time.

 

Why Taking Breaks is Important

Breaks give us time to clear our heads and tend to non-business matters. But sometimes it’s tempting to take longer breaks when we’re working for ourselves, and that cuts into time that could be spent on business. And sometimes we get so caught up in getting our work done that we make our breaks too short to serve their purpose. Setting a timer can help us take breaks that are not too long or too short.

Managing time successfully is one of the most important things a business owner can do. Setting timers can help us avoid spending too much time on some things and not enough on others. Give it a try. You just might find that the timer is your new best friend.

Limiting Beliefs and Your Goals

Our goal series is just about to wrap up this month, but today’s topic is about Limiting Beliefs and Your Goals. Now, wait, what do limiting beliefs have to do with achieving my goals you ask?

A lot! Read on to find out.

Everyone has conscious or subconscious ideas that can become limiting beliefs. These will often stop us from achieving our goals if we let them. See that? Everyone does! Sometimes these beliefs are instilled in us in childhood and sometimes we create them ourselves.

 

What is a Limiting Belief?

An example of a limiting belief that can get in your way of success is how you see yourself with money.

If you believe you will always struggle and always be poor, chances are you’ll set yourself up for failure. Your limiting belief that you’re poor and that you always will be poor becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The same can be said about anything negative in your life that limits you – whether it’s a career, education, or personal such as being healthy and of normal weight. If you see yourself a certain way, it can be hard to change that view and let go of that belief.

The 8 Phrases

There are eight telling phrases that point to a limiting belief:

1. “It’s hopeless” – Anytime you use the word “never” is a clue that you’re focusing on a limiting belief. For example: “I’ll never have any money because you need money to make money.” How many times have you heard this one?

2. “I’m helpless” – When most people feel uneducated or helpless, they blame their circumstances instead of working to change them. “I can’t manage my money because I don’t know how” sounds insightful. But the part that’s missing is the feeling of helplessness. All you need to do is take a personal finance course or buy, read and practice the lessons in “Personal Finances for Dummies”.

3. “It’s useless” – The idea that nothing you do will make a difference is that you believe that any action you take won’t make a difference. “It doesn’t matter if I work out an hour a day, I won’t lose weight anyway.” How do you know? Have you tried to do anything for longer than a couple of weeks?

4. “It’s the universe” – Sometimes a limiting belief has to do with the idea that outside forces that you can’t control are at work keeping you down. You can’t find a job or get clients because the economy sucks, where you live is depressed, you don’t have the right clothing, and so forth. But if you do nothing in your power to change it because it’s destiny. You know that’s BS, right? “Everything happens for a reason” type of thinking can be very limiting and make you feel powerless.

5. “I’m worthless” – The idea that you’re not smart enough or good enough to do what you really want can be a very strong limiting belief system. For some reason, this seems to affect women more than men. You feel you’re not pretty enough, smart enough, or good enough to have something. So you don’t take the steps to achieve it, because you don’t feel that you deserve it.

6. “It’s genetic” – While there are certainly some instances where genetics play a huge role in a person’s life, the truth is that almost everything that is genetic can be fixed with the right mindset. The right training, exercise, and outlook will help you immensely. You’re not stuck with your genetics, but if you think you are, you may not try any of the things to pull yourself out of the rut you’re stuck in. So you need to get busy on yourself.

7. “I’ll fail” – The truth is the fear of failure is something most people have as a limiting belief. “I’m a bad public speaker so if I do it, I’ll be judged, and I’ll fail anyway so why try” is a common refrain. But, how can you set that belief in stone if you’ve not tried?

8. “I’m different” – The limiting belief about being different is that different isn’t necessarily bad. You don’t want to be who you are because you’re different and you’ll be looked at as different by other people. You’re afraid to be who you are. Because of that, you don’t even know who you are. And you’re too scared to find out due to fear of rejection and ending up alone.

If you ever hear any of these phrases go through your head, disconnect from them immediately! Turn them around to “why not me” instead of “why me.” Always ask “why not me” because the truth is, you’re not feeling anything different from anyone else who has made goals and achieved them.

The difference is in the doing, not the intelligence or talent. So there, that’s my 2 cents for this week’s article.

Today’s topic of discussion is all about the 5 Tips to Setting Realistic Business Goals. Most people think that setting goals are easy, and they are, but you need to get down to the specifics. Just what kind of business goals will help you create a successful business?

When it comes to setting your goals, it can be tricky to find that middle ground. If you set goals that are too high, you might get discouraged. If you set them too low, you may end up bored or complacent. You might even become disillusioned with your business. So how do you strike a balance?

 

The 5 Tips To Goal Setting

The tips below should help you to make your decisions.

1. What do you want?

First, you need to determine what you want. Go ahead and brainstorm – make a list as you do. Put it down on paper and don’t hold back.

2. Assess your list

Now, take a look at your list. Make a sub-list of steps you have to take to reach each of those goals and dreams. Are there some items on your dream list that involve steps you can’t take? If you cannot take the steps necessary to achieve that goal, then it needs to be modified or removed from your list.

 

What Comes Next?

3. Strategize

As you are making your sub-list of steps, you need to develop definite strategies for those items on your dream list that are achievable. Being able to see what is necessary to achieve that dream can help you decide whether or not to pursue it. Because the strategy may in fact be doable, you might be unwilling to take those steps for personal reasons. That is fine; it’s your list and your goals.

Go ahead and don’t judge yourself – if you can’t/don’t want to adopt a certain strategy for your own reasons, then cross that goal off the list. The point is to narrow things down.

4. Timeline

Determine a timeline for your goals. Do you need to make more money right now, as in this month? Or do you have more long-term goals, such as eventually quitting your day job? On your master list, write down your timeline. This will help you further narrow things down – if the goal can’t be reached within your allotted time, then it doesn’t belong on your list of goals.

5. Know yourself

So, one of the keys to succeeding is to be really honest about your strengths and weaknesses. Sometimes we think we can do it all, or do anything…and other times we think we can’t do anything. Neither of these extremes is likely to be true! If you can, ask others what they think they can see you doing. Once again, break out your pencil – list things you like to do and abilities you feel confident about. Just about any skill or attribute can be channeled into helping your business succeed.

These list-making exercises can help narrow down your goals and keep them realistic and reachable.

Today lets talk about persistence and whether or not success requires persistence. For starters, how many old sayings, aphorisms, and clichés are there about persistence? The early bird gets the worm. Slow and steady wins the race. If at first, you dont succeed, try again. If life gives you lemons make lemonade. The list goes on and on. Right?

The reason that there are so many old sayings about persistence is twofold: First, its a really important element in success and second, it an element of success that gives a lot of people a lot of trouble.

The Importance of Success

 

Something thats as important and troublesome as persistence deserves a lot of clichéd sayings and a lot of attention. Are you persistent?  Meaning = do you never give up?

The problem with the road to success is that many people only picture the destination, not the journey

When they do this, they not only fail to see that true success is not a destination (its a lifelong process) but they also fail to see the potential problems that routinely occur when striving for success. 

The Prepared Person Has Persistence

 

Are you prepared? Or are you the person who is so unprepared that you get stopped dead in your tracks? 

And in your confusion, you forget where you’re going and why? Are you going backward or forward toward success? 

When you are prepared for and anticipate the setbacks that can and will happen on the journey to success, you are ready to repair, rethink and reengage.

Persistence is a Two Way Street

 

The persistent person understands that failure is a temporary condition that affects everyone at one time or another before they reach their goal. They also understand that failure and setbacks teach powerful lessons that ultimately make you stronger.

As Gandhi said, strength does not come through winning. Instead, strength comes through failure. When you struggle and decide not to quit, that is strength.

It is also persistent and points to why every successful business owner understands that setbacks are opportunities in disguise.

How to Keep a Gratitude Journal

Gratitude journaling is a popular tool used by coaches and consultants helping people to improve their health and lives. Studies have shown the benefits of mental and physical health. If you are considering whether this could be something that could help you then you probably have questions about what you need and how to do it. Gratitude journaling is actually very low cost and fairly simple.

 

You will need:

 

Writing implements: You could use a pen or pencil but why not increase the fun and creative aspect of your journaling by adding color and even texture. Different colored pens or pencils, as well as different styles, can make your gratitude journal not just a record of thanks but also a really creative endeavor.

 

Notebook: While you could use a piece of paper, keeping a special notebook for your gratitude journal ensures that you will know exactly where you are writing and allows you to review previous gratitude records. Your notebook can be a plain and simple one or you could splash out on a more decorative one. However, why not consider using a plain notebook and jazzing it up yourself.

 

By decorating a plain notebook or making a book from scratch you are making a greater commitment to the project itself. Your notebook will mean more to you and you will feel a greater connection to it when you use it. After all, if you are writing positive thoughts inside it, you also want to feel happy and proud when you see it.

 

Time Alone: By taking time out away from disturbances you are giving yourself space to think, relax, and write. You’ll also find that you enjoy the experience of being alone and celebrating those things you are thankful for.

Collect your journal and whatever you’ve chosen to write with.

 

Find somewhere quiet and that you know you won’t be disturbed. Your journaling time should be a time for reflection and celebration free from outside distractions for the best results.

 

Ensure you are committed to gratitude journaling and that you want to feel happier as well as more grateful as a result. There is no point in just going through the motions of journaling without creating a positive meaningful emotional experience.

 

When you write, instead of creating a long list of things you are grateful for put some real thought into it. Take time to write about a particular event and describe in detail why you are thankful for it. Remember to record how you felt and why.

 

Try to include people you are thankful for as much as you can, not just events. By including specific people and the reasons you are thankful for them you will create a greater emotional impact. It becomes more personal.

 

Include surprises and unexpected events as these will create a stronger sense of gratitude and a more significant emotional impact.

 

Time to Reflect

 

Set yourself a weekly date to write in your gratitude journal. While you could journal every day it may be more beneficial to create a habit of writing in your gratitude journal once a week. This will allow you to plan for it and enjoy it.

 

There are no right or wrong ways to keep a gratitude journal. Everyone’s will be different. However, it is important that you are committed to the process and the outcome, as well as make time for it on a regular basis.
